The bisexual flag: its history and meaning

The Bisexual Pride Flag was designed in 1998 by Michael Page to provide the bisexual community its own identity symbol. Like the gay rainbow flag, which represents the LGBT community as a whole, the bisexual flag refers to the bisexual community. The Bisexual Pride flag was originally intended to increase the visibility of the bisexual community both in society at large and within the LGBT movement itself.

Its colours are pink, which represents attraction to the same gender or sex (homosexuality, gays or lesbians), blue, which represents attraction to the opposite gender or sex (heterosexuality) and purple, a mixture of the two previous colours, which represents sexual attraction to both genders and/or sexes (bisexuality).

The three colour bands are horizontal in ratio (2:1:2), so the colour purple is in the centre of pink and blue. Michael Page explains that the purple pixels blend imperceptibly into the pink and blue, like the bisexual community which blends imperceptibly into the straight, gay and lesbian communities, and therefore sometimes lacks visibility.

The creator of the flag took the colours of the blue and pink triangle, which represents bisexuality and bisexual pride.
