The French Freemasonry counts today about 170.000 members and there are about 2 million Freemasons throughout the world. Freemasonry has long fuelled fantasies and unleashed passions, sometimes described as a fraternal organization, a secret society, a deist ideological movement, an initiatory society, a philosophical club or even a political lobby, the least we can say is that even in the 21st century we have not managed to find an exhaustive definition of this organization especially since its members know how to be very discreet!

Indeed, Freemasonry has not finished being the object of speculations sometimes quite contradictory. Moreover, it is defined by Larousse dictionary as 'a closed world Society, whose members, or brothers, who recognize each other by signs, possess alone the secrets under oath'. Some conspiracy theorists even claim that Freemasons rule the world and that some big lodges would have orchestrated the French Revolution, but which is which?

History of Freemasonry: rather difficult to unravel

It would seem that Freemasonry as it exists today finds its origins in the formation of the first Grand Lodge of London and Westminster (the masonic lodge commonly refers to the social and ritual space of the Freemasons), a little over 300 years ago in 1717, although its beginnings are to be found in 'operative masonry', professional organizations that grouped together people from the building trade; the builders. These organizations can be dated way back to 715 B.C. among the Greeks and Egyptians.

But let’s go back of the Grand Lodge of London which was born in the tavern of the Goose and Grill and was originally a grouping of several Masonic lodges in London and had for objective to promote a brotherly mutual aid between its various members belonging in major part to the same trade although these lodges were also open to certain members not belonging to the trade. As time went by, the membership of these non-tradesmen only intensified. Its doctrine gradually became the search for truth!

Indeed, modern Freemasonry is simultaneously a process of improving one's psyche through the search for one's own truth, hence the importance of the initiation rites of the various Masonic obedience’s throughout the world.
