The flag of Reunion Island, also known as The Radiant Volcano or “Mavéli” is composed of a dark blue background, a red triangle and five yellow rays. This rectangle flag is one of the symbols of Reunion Island, an overseas department of the French Republic and an island located in the Mascarene archipelago. As Reunion Island is a French department, its official flag remains the French tricolour flag but like many departments and former provinces of France, it also displays a regional flag.

Although this sign has never been officially adopted, it remains the most used flag to represent the region. Other Reunionese emblems include the tropicbird, a long-tailed seabird, and the “Margouillat”, a gecko that is omnipresent on the island.

Symbolism and history of the flag of Reunion Island - Mavéli

The Mavéli is currently the most used flag to represent Reunion Island. This regional symbol of Reunion Island was designed in 1975 by Guy Pignolet and is used by several town halls of the island like Saint Denis, Saint-Joseph, and Saint-Philippe where it is hoisted alongside the French blue-white-red flag. This flag consists of a red triangle on a blue background and several rays diverging from the top of the triangle.

The red triangle represents the famous active volcano called Piton de la Fournaise which literally gave birth to the island.

The blue background represents the sky and the softness of the atmosphere.

The yellow rays symbolize the people of Reunion and the successive waves of migration.

The other famous flags of Reunion Island

While the question of the official Reunion flag to be hung on the facade of official institutions alongside the flag of France and the flag of the European Union remains, other flags of Reunion Island are still in the competition to claim the title:

The independentist flag

This flag, also called 'drapo nasyon' was adopted in 2006 by a collective of nationalist movements in Reunion.

The banner consists of three horizontal bands of red-yellow-green, with a yellow star in the first red band.

- The red symbolizes the suffering of slaves and indentured laborers who were among the first to arrive on the island.

- The yellow is a tribute to the ancestors and the five-pointed star represents the five main populations that came to populate Reunion Island - Kaf (African origins), Malbar (Indian origins), Sinois (Chinese origins, more precisely from the city of Canton), Yab (descendants of the first French settlers) and Zarab (Indian origins but of Muslim faith).

- Green is a symbol of the hope that inhabited the brown slaves in search of freedom.

The cultural flag of Reunion Island

This flag was proposed in 1984 to represent the population of Reunion in all its plurality. It is composed of three stripes Blue-Green-Black on which are affixed a red triangle and a yellow circle.

This diversity of colours of the flag represents on the one hand the multicultural identity of the Reunionese community and symbolizes the five continents from which the ancestors of the Reunionese population originated.

On the other hand, the flag symbolizes the country itself and its history:

The red triangle represents the birth of the island and its volcanic origin, the yellow circle represents the sun that shines on the island, the blue colour symbolizes the sky and the sea that surround the island and the green stripe symbolizes the lush vegetation of the island, the land, hope for the future and freedom. The black band symbolizes the past and the slave era of Reunion Island.

The APDR flag

This flag which is among the most serious contenders for the title of national flag of Reunion Island was proposed in 1996 by the association for the flag of Reunion Island.

This multi-coloured flag which celebrates the 'living together' takes on its left part the French flag and on its right, we find four red, green, yellow, and blue triangles which join to form a square. At the intersection of the four triangles, we find a white circle. The four triangles represent the different ethnic groups of Reunion Island and the white circle symbolizes the peace that reigns between them.
