Meuse Coat of Arms

This coat of arms was created around 1950 by Robert Louis, herald designer for the French State Seals and Coat of Arms Commission showing an Azure background covered in several golden-base crosses with two adjoining sea bass fish sewn into the design, giving off a nautical theme.

Sea bass are fish defined by their dangerous dorsal spines. In the Mediterranean, the sea bass is known as the "sea wolf". Described as ferocious sea creatures, it was for this reason that Earls of Bars chose this fish as their unofficial weapon.

While the Coat of Arms may resemble a banner, spangled with stars and stripes, there are actually two distinct sea bass fish on this banner. These two fish are said to symbolise a couple, an association or a grand union. The two fish could also signify life and death. Life could not exist without water. Water can also be of a destructive force, taking the form of floods whether in prehistoric times or even nowadays. Designs woven into the Meuse Coat of Arms remain symbolic of flag history. They could even serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by marshals, carrying war flags on the front line.
