Discover the Paris flag and Paris in brief

The flag of Paris is the flag of the capital of France and the capital of the Ile de France region!

Paris is located on the banks of the Seine and it is a European megalopolis and political and economic centre of the world famous for its artistic and cultural influence, which makes it the most visited tourist city in the world!

Indeed, this charming city abounds in an exceptional historical and cultural heritage with its historical monuments that have in fact dreamed of more than one: the Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysées, the Louvre Museum, the Musée d'Orsay, the Jardin des Plantes, the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur... in all Paris has more than 2185 monuments to visit: from old sites such as Île de la Cité or Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral to more modern buildings such as the Centre Pompidou or the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie!

The city of Paris had the Latin name "Lutèce". It owes its current name to the Gallic (Celtic) people who occupied the region and who built the first oppidum, the Parisii. In the 5th century the city was called Civitas Parisiorum (city of Parisii), which later became Paris.

The Paris flag is one of the emblems associated with the city of Paris, such as the Paris coat of arms and its official motto: "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" (It flies but does not sink) or the very famous silhouette of the Eiffel Tower !

The flag of the city of Paris is a two-tone flag that uses the colours of the Paris coat of arms, blue and red. They are arranged vertically in the background of the flag with the blue on the first side of the flag pole and the red on the wind side. According to some interpretations, blue would be associated with Saint Martin or Sainte Geneviève while red would be associated with Saint Denis. Some historians believe that it is the two colours of Paris that now adorn the French tricolour flag, in which a white band, the colour of royalty, has been inserted. Others maintain that the flag of France comes from the tricolor cockade of La Fayette or Baily, mayor of Paris. On the two blue and red stripes in the centre are the arms of the city of Paris.

Composition, history and symbolism of the Paris coat of arms in the centre of the flag

The flag of Paris with the coat of arms is derived from an ancient symbolism relating to navigation on the Seine. You can see it floating on the Paris City Hall. The central shield of the coat of arms of the City of Paris blasphemes in heraldic language in this way: "Shield Gules with a nave equipped and dressed in silver sailing on waves from the same point, on a chief sewn Azure fleurdelysé Or. ».

For those new to vexillology, in other words, it means that you can see a white boat sailing on the waves on a red background in the lower part and an azure blue field covered with a golden fleur-de-lis pattern in the upper part of the shield.

This shield is surmounted by a mural crown with five crest towers (the upper part) and in the lower part there are three symbolic victory crosses: the Legion of Honour, the War Cross and the Liberation Cross. The coat of arms is surrounded by two branches: an oak branch to the dexter (right) and a laurel branch to the sinister (left). The motto of the city of Paris, Fluctuat Nec Mergitur, inscribed in a listel, supports the whole coat of arms.

All the elements of the Parisian coat of arms in the centre of the Paris flag give it a particular symbolic strength. Its central emblem, the ship, represents the Nautes de Lutèce (brotherhoods of shipowners, sailors and merchants of Gaul) and thus evokes the great economic activity in Paris and the history of its development around the Seine. The city of Paris embodies the vitality and strength of the French people and of this city that "floats but does not sink" as the motto says. It is associated with the oak representing wisdom and the olive tree the ultimate symbol of peace.

Long live Paris! Long live France!
