History and different uses of the Quebec flag

The Quebec flag consists of four blue rectangles in the cantons of the flag, each with a fleur-de-lis, separated by a white cross. It is also called "Fleurdelisé". It is one of the symbols of Quebec, a French-speaking province in Canada.

Quebec is located between the province of Ontario and the Atlantic provinces in eastern Canada. In the south of the country, it shares a common border with the United States. This Canadian province connects the Great Lakes of North America to the North Atlantic Ocean and is crossed by the St. Lawrence River, the emissary river of the Great Lakes basin whose estuary is the largest in the world.

We see the Quebec flag flying on all public buildings in Quebec as well as on the buildings that house Quebec delegations abroad. It was first used on January 21, 1948, the day it was adopted under the mandate of Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis, founder of the Quebec Party of the National Union. It was at the top of the tower of the Parliament Building in Quebec City that it was hoisted for the very first time.

The Quebec flag is represented by the vexillological symbols for flag and flag of the world and by the FIAV (Fédération Internationale des Associations Vexillologiques), i.e. it is the de jure () version of the Quebec emblem (its use has been legislated by Quebec). The first line of the vexillological symbol represents the land use of the flag: in this case it is the civil and state flag of Quebec respectively.

Buy / Sell Quebec flags: its heraldic origins and its blue and white colours

This flag blasphemes in heraldic language: azure (blue) to the silver cross (white) enclosed by four fleurs-de-lis.

Its ancestors are the banner of the Battle of Carillon (18th century battle between France and Britain against Fort Carillon, now in the United States in the Lake Champlain region) and the Modern Carillon (nicknamed the Sacred Heart Carillon) which were popular flags in Quebec when it had as its emblem the Union Jack (the flag of the United Kingdom) or the Quebec Blue Ensign in the 19th century.

The white cross refers to Quebec's historical attachment to Western Catholic Europe. The blue colour evokes the Virgin Mary, its hue on the Quebec flag has evolved over time. The fleurs-de-lis recall the ancient historical French flags of the 13th and 14th centuries (Clovis flag, royal French flag, flag at the white cross of Saint Michael), the golden fleurs-de-lis being the emblem of the French monarchy. The fleur-de-lis flag refers to the historical period of New France (the former French colony of the Americas including the territories of Acadia, Canada and Louisiana) rather than the attachment of the Quebec people to French royalty.
