Some details about the history and symbolism of the Sardinia flag

The Sardinia flag is the official flag of the Italian autonomous region of Sardinia! This island of Italy is located in the west of the Italian coasts, south of the French island of Corsica and north of the Tunisian and Algerian coasts. Sardinia is the second largest Mediterranean island after its Italian sister, the island of Sicily! It is a popular tourist destination renowned for its beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, archaeological remains of the Nuraghi, cultural traditions, folk dances. The polyphonic song of the "Canto a Tenore" is also a curiosity that has been declared a UNESCO intangible heritage.

The flag of Sardinia consists of two main elements arranged on a white background: a red cross (Cross of Saint George) which displays in its four cantons four black Moorish heads. It was adopted as a regional emblem in 1999 by the Sardinian authorities! Its nickname: the "flag of the four Moors". Like its neighbour, the flag of Corsica, it is one of the only flags in the world to display the symbol of the Moor's head (not to be confused with the skull!).

The Moor on the Sardinian flag is in profile and you can only see the left part of his face. He is blindfolded by a scarf and wears an earring. This symbol would be of origin of the kingdom of Aragon (kingdom of Spain which had ruled the island of Sardinia in the 14th century). It is the sign of the rivalry between Aragonese and Muslims. There are four Moorish heads representing the four original provinces of Sardinia: Cagliari, Oristano, Sassari and Nuoro.

Another historical interpretation attributes the head of the Moor to the Christian martyr Saint Mauritius of Nubian ethnicity who died for his faith in Switzerland: this head, cut by the Romans, is said to be an ancient heraldic symbol of the High Middle Ages that was transmitted in some European regions.
