Purchase / Sale of Corsican flags and accessories: the origins and colours of the Corsican flag

Among all world flags, the Corsican flag consists of a white background and a black Moorish head in its centre. It is one of the symbols of Corsica, nicknamed the beauty island or Ile Rousse, the 4th largest island territory located in the Mediterranean Sea. Corsica is also one of the 22 French metropolitan regions. It is located 12km from the Italian island of Sardinia and some 170km from the French coast. It is divided into two French departments: South Corsica (2A) and Upper Corsica (2B).

The Corsican flag has been the main symbol of Corsica since 1755. In heraldry, it represents a silver coat of arms (white in colour) with the head of a sandy Moorish (black in colour). For the inhabitants of the island, the head of the Moor is called "Testa Mora" in Corsican. It is intimately related to the history of Corsica and its legends.

Why is there a Moor's head on the Corsican flag?

Various interpretations explain the origin of the Moor's head of the Corsican coat of arms.

According to a legend, the Moorish head is a real skull and crossbones! The story goes that a Corsican girl was kidnapped by a Moorish chief of Saracen origin. Her fiancé hunted down and fought to recover her in the camp of the Moorish invaders with the help of the inhabitants of Aléria. Victorious, the Corsicans would have gone around the island to display the decapitated head of the Moor in a white sheet. Hence the black head on an immaculate fabric.

One of the more credible historical interpretations is that Corsica, at the time under the domination of the King of Spain, had no emblems in the 16th century. In order to design a complete atlas of the King of Aragon's possessions, the geographer Galerati attributed the coat of arms of Sardinia to Corsica by adapting the design of the shield: a Moor's head instead of the red cross flag with four heads of Moors of Sardinia.

Others say that the head of Moor refers to the head of Saint-Maurice, a Christian martyr of Nubian origin from the 3rd century who had his head cut off for his faith in the Swiss Valais. Anyway, the Corsican flag with Moorish head is one of the oldest in Europe!

Did you know that the original flag before 1755 had a Moor, with an earring and blindfolded eyes? Today, the Moor's white band is on his forehead and the earring has disappeared on the current Corsican flag!
