Some geographical and administrative details on Guadeloupe

The region of Guadeloupe is an overseas region and department of France (code 971). This island is located in the Caribbean Sea in eastern Central America and southeast of the Gulf of Mexico.

This Caribbean territory is an archipelago that consists of two main islands: Grande Terre and Basse Terre (Karukera in Amerindian) which form a pretty butterfly on the map.  It also includes several small islands and islets such as Marie Galante, the Archipelago of the Saintes and Désirade.

Among all world flags, along with the Martinique flag and the flag of French Guiana, the Guadeloupe flag is part of the set of emblems of the French overseas territories known as the Antilles-Guiana in the American continent.

Discover two beautiful overseas regional flags !

Although the official flag of Guadeloupe is officially the French national flag of France, Guadeloupe uses several variants of regional flags to fly its colours !

The first Guadeloupe flag consists of two horizontal stripes that are green, two white stripes and a large central red and then a golden star (on the side of the flagpole). It is the Guadeloupian independence flag. Currently it is mainly used as a rallying emblem for certain trade unionist groups in Guadeloupe for its symbolism evoking union and strength. Like many African flags (notably the Ethiopian flag), its colours were inspired by the Rasta movement and Bob Marley's colours. It is the symbol of identification that the Afro-Guadeloupean cultural community of the country has decided to display as its emblem.

The second flag of Guadeloupe is particularly pleasant to the eye thanks to its beautiful and quite original composition. This unofficial flag is based on the historical Guadeloupian coats of arms. In heraldry it is said to be "Sable, with sugar canes leafed Vert, in the sun shining Or; on the chief Azure semé de trois fleurs de lys Or. "In other words, it has a blue stripe in the upper part with three yellow lilies and a wider horizontal black stripe in the lower part with a golden sun and a sugar cane boot. This flag is used by some official administrations in Guadeloupe but is criticized by the Guadeloupe autonomous and independence movements because of its slavery connotation. This former naval flag was first hoisted on the masts of Guadeloupe's merchant ships, particularly on slave boats.
