Some geographical and administrative details on Martinique
Martinique is an island located in the Lesser Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean seas that was discovered by explorer Christopher Columbus in 1502. This overseas region of France is administratively considered as a single territorial authority (Department and overseas region). It is located not far from Guadeloupe, another French island region.
Although the official flag of Martinique is the flag of France, there are several variants of the Martinican regional flags.

The red, green and black nationalist flag (a red triangle on the flagpole side and two green and black quadrilaterals) reflects the colours of UNIA, a black movement created by Marcus Garvey, the famous activist who pioneered pan-Africanism. Nowadays, this flag is used as a banner by Martinican autonomists and independence fighters during demonstrations.
Another flag with three red, green and black colours was created by OJAM (Organisation de la jeunesse anticolonialiste de la Martinique), a movement that had the following motto: "La Martinique aux Martiniquais" in the 1960s. This emblem is a tricolour flag with horizontal stripes.
The other regional flag is the snake flag. The model of this flag comes from an old merchant navy flag that was flown on commercial ships (sometimes triangular trade by the way). This Martinican flag is decorated with four spearhead snakes on a blue background in the four corners of the flag (the island's endemic snake) and a white cross. This unofficial flag can be seen flying on some public buildings in Martinique.
