The ABCs of the Andalusia flag

In the south of the Iberian Peninsula, Andalusia is the southernmost Spanish autonomous community in the country of Spain and the second largest in terms of area after the region of Castile and Leon. It borders Portugal to the west and the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Atlantic Ocean. It is the famous Strait of Gibraltar that separates both Andalusia (European continent) from Morocco (African continent) and the Sea from the Ocean.

Andalusia is famous for being the land of flamenco, for its bullfighting culture (bullfighting) and for its many festivals all year round (especially the festivals!). For you, who are a transient lover or admirer of Andalusian culture and its diversity, we invite you to discover everything there is to know about the Andalusian flag, also called the "bandera Blanquiverde": its history, its colours and its symbolism!

This rectangular flag of size 3/5 was adopted on 8th November 1983 to represent the historical and administrative territory of Andalusia by decree of the Andalusian Parliament! It flies alongside the Spanish national flag on the official buildings of Andalusia.

It has two horizontal green stripes at the top and bottom of the fabric that surrounds a central white stripe. In the centre of the flag, straddling the white band and the two green bands, you can see the coat of arms of Andalusia flying.

The flag of Andalusia has its origins in the history of Al-Andalus, this large territory comprising a large part of the Iberian Peninsula as well as some lands in the south of France which was under Muslim rule between the first Muslim landing in 711 and the fall of Granada in 1492. The white and green of the flag were indeed the symbolic colours attributed to these lands of Iberian Islam.

It was the famous Andalusian nationalist politician Blas Infante, known as "the father of the homeland of Andalusia", who plunged into this extremely rich part of Andalusia's past to design the composition of the flag in 1918. According to his interpretation, the colour green is attributed to the Umayyads (Arab dynasty of caliphs descended from the Quraysh tribe during the time of the Prophet Mohammed who extended his territory to the Iberian Peninsula), while the colour white refers to the Almonhades (Berber dynasty who also ruled Al Andalus). These two Muslim dynasties are considered to be the largest and most glorious dynasties in Al Andalus. Moreover, did you know that the green hue of the Andalusian flag has also been called Umayyad green since 1983, the year the flag was adopted?

Beyond historical references, green and white also represent the hope of the Andalusian people and their desire for peace.

The coat of arms of Andalusia consists of the drawing of Hercules accompanied by two lions between two columns and bears the motto: "Dominator Hercules Fundator" (Hercules, master and founder). At the bottom of the shield is the motto of Andalusia: "Andalucía por sí, para España y la humanidad" ("Andalusia for her, for Spain and for humanity"). It is in the history of the 10th work of Hercules that we find the origins of the link between Hercules and Andalusia and we invite you to read again this fascinating history of the "two columns of Hercules": Ceuta and Gibraltar.
