History of the flag of the Valencian Community

Adopted on July 1st 1982, the flag of Valencia in Spain is based on the traditional colours of the Crown of Aragon, four red stripes on a gold background, shown vertically on the left side. The flag also features a red, green and gold crown on a blue background. It is commonly called Senyera Coronada in Catalan. In Castilian, it is called señera.

Historically, this model is the flag of the city of Valencia which was adopted as a regional symbol by the first Valencianist parties. At the time of the democratic transition, the Council of the Valencian Country, led by the socialist Josep Lluís Albiñana, adopted the senyera as its official flag, without the blue fringe. This flag was also adopted by the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, but unlike the latter, the coat of arms of Peter IV of Aragon.

However, following the battle of Valencia and the strong opposition of the Blavérista sectors and the UCD3, the flag with the blue fringe was finally adopted as the official flag.
