Discover the symbolism behind the design and colors of the Alabama flag!

The American flag of Alabama is one of the symbols of the 22nd state of the United States. This southern state of the United States is located on the border of Mississippi in the west, Georgia in the east, Florida in the south and Tennessee in the north. It has a very small coastline overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

This South American state of the USA is located in the Deep South cultural region known as the cradle of jazz, with its bayou landscapes, alligators, slavery past and cotton plantations, Cajun cuisine.

Alabama is also in the heart of the Deep South: that's why it is called "The Heart of Dixie" (Dixie or Dixieland given the nickname given to these territories in the South of the States, most precisely the former Confederate States of America).

Historical origin of the Alabama flag!

The Alabama flag was officially adopted in 1895 and it consists of a simple crimson red heraldic saltire (cross of Saint Andrew) on a white background.

This symbol could have been inspired by the Confederate War Flag (Southern flag) but it seems that its origins come from the flag of New Spain of the Habsburg dynasty and the beginning of the Bourbons. The territory of New Spain (or "Old Mexico"), a division of the former Spanish Empire, included many of the countries of Central America as well as several United States states such as Alabama, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Florida. Another interpretation would be that this flag is inspired by the flag of St. Patrick, the red on white saltire of the Union Flag.

In any case, the flag of Alabama is a relatively important symbol of Christianity in the history of this southern state!
