The Maryland flag is one of the symbols of the 7th state of the USA. The Maryland flag is a four-coloured flag divided into four parts that was adopted in 1904. The state, which was one of the thirteen founding colonies of the United States of America, is located on the eastern seaboard bordering Virginia, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Pennsylvania. It is also home to many historical sites and museums such as the Monocacy Battlefield, the Annapolis Maritime Museum, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and the home of Edgar Allan Poe. In this section you will find many flags representations the state: table flags, pennants, flagpoles, and large flags. The Maryland banner includes the red and white coat of arms of the Crossland family and the black and gold coat of arms of the Calvert family. Spotlight on the Maryland flag.

The Maryland flag: a rather ambiguous symbolism!

Many people probably wonder why Maryland was one of the founding states and yet has the red and white coat of arms flown by soldiers of the Confederacy on the other side of the border on its vexillary emblem. Rather paradoxical, isn't it?

In fact, the explanation to it, is rather simple. If Maryland is undoubtedly part of the thirteen colonies of anti-slavery origin, it is necessary to know that it was not unanimous within its population which fought for the two camps; Because if a major part of the inhabitants of Maryland was for the Independence of the USA and the abolition of slavery, another part which included especially the cotton and tobacco planters of the state rallied to the confederate states which were for the maintenance of slavery. A part of the population fought for the Northern states and took as a banner the black and gold coat of arms of the Calvert family while the other part fought alongside the Confederate states of the South and took the coat of arms of the Crossland family as a banner, and this is how it is considered today as an emblem of the Confederacy of the Southern states. Using both symbols on its official flag was also a symbolic way to reunite this state that the Civil War had deeply divided.
