The flag of Minnesota is one of the symbols of the 32nd state of the USA. Like many other state emblems, the official flag of Minnesota features the state seal on a blue background. This flag was adopted in 1957, but the large seal on it was changed in 1983. On May 11, 1858, Minnesota joined the thirteen founding colonies and other states that joined along the way, becoming the 32nd state of the United States. This northern US state is bordered by Canada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Minnesota was populated by various Native American communities, mostly Sioux, some of whom remain to this day.  You will find in this section many Minnesota flags: pennants with gold fringe, small table flags, and large flags and flags, among others.

Minnesota Flag Symbolism

The first thing that draws attention to the Minnesota emblem is the state seal that sits at the centre of the blue flag. The seal of Minnesota includes several symbolic elements:

- The man ploughing the land represents the importance of agriculture to the state.

- The cut-out tree trunk emphasizes the importance of the lumber industry and sawmills in the region.

- If the current banner shows a Sioux running south under the gaze of a white man, at the base, it was running westward to symbolize the conquest of the West: thus, it meant that the white man was pushing the Indians westward to capture the land on the frontier; a rather pejorative symbolism.

- Three significant dates are interspersed in the seal's outline: first, 1858, the year it was admitted as the 32nd state to the U.S. state union; second, 1819, the year Fort Snelling was built to protect the state from invasion; and third, 1893, the year the original flag was adopted.

- The 19 stars symbolize that Minnesota was the 19th state to join the Union of the thirteen founding colonies.

- The North Star is inscribed in French in a white ribbon.

According to section 1.141 of the state law, the Minnesota flag must be flown on the grounds of the State Capitol from sunrise to sunset.
