The official flag of the state of New York represents several important symbols for the United States of America:

- To the left of the flag is a figure representing the Goddess of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap and carrying a spear. She symbolizes the independence of the United Kingdom at the time.

- To the right of this banner is a figure representing Justice, also wearing a Phrygian cap and blindfolded and holding a sword and the scales of justice represented blindfolded, holding a sword and the scales of justice, also wearing a Phrygian cap.

- These two figures surround a coat of arms. On the coat of arms are two ships sailing on the water, symbolizing the maritime industry of the state.

- This coat of arms is surmounted by a globe showing the Atlantic Ocean where Uncle Sam's country is located and a bald eagle. The coat of arms is surmounted by a globe showing the Atlantic Ocean and a bald eagle, the official animal representation of the USA.

- Under the coat of arms, there is also a white ribbon with the official state motto 'Excelsior' which means 'Higher'.
