The symbolism of the Pennsylvania state flag

The flag of Pennsylvania features the state's coat of arms on a blue background. The coat of arms on this flag has several symbolic elements; first, it includes a shield topped by a bald eagle - the symbolic bird of the United States of America - to show that the state has pledged allegiance to the United States of America. This bird itself stands above a shield that includes several symbols of the state's pillars - a ship carrying goods made in the state to all parts of the world; a clay-red plow, symbolizing Pennsylvania's rich natural resources; and three sheaves of golden wheat, representing fertile fields and Pennsylvania's labor force. The coat of arms also includes an olive branch and an ear of corn crossed below, symbols of peace and prosperity.

Finally there is another very important element; the state motto, "Virtue, Liberty and Independence" is inscribed on a ribbon at the bottom of the official Pennsylvania flag.
