Flags of the First French Colonial Empire; the kind of history to be known

The flags you will find in this section are memorials of this period, which stretches from 1534 to 1815 and marks the apogee of France as a colonising power. Did you know that the first French colonial empire corresponds not only to a period but also to a geographical territory and that the French colonial conquests could be sub-categorized into three distinct geographical areas from the 17th century onwards:

New France: this region also known as the Viceroyalty of France comprised the French colonies in North America and had Quebec as its capital.

The West Indies: when Spain decided to abandon the Caribbean as a colonised territory, the French Crown decided to take over Guadeloupe, Martinique, Santo Domingo and Guyana in order to curb the Dutch colonial conquests, which were at the forefront of the great colonial powers of the time. After the decolonisation process, these territories were given the status of overseas departments.

The East India route: France had several strategic colonial territories on this maritime route linking Europe and the East Indies, including the Ile Bourbon and the Isle de France.

In this section we find several flags that refer to these former French colonies: the flag of the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia or the standard of New France. The purpose of these banners was to assert France's status as a major colonial power. The flags of the former French colonial empire are available with several forms of attachment: small table flags with flagpole and base or flags with cords or scabbards. If you are interested in the history of colonisation or if you teach a course on French colonial policy or ideology, many of the flags in this section may be of interest to you.
