The flag of the USSR: its history, its graphic composition, its symbolism

The flag of the USSR is a communist flag with a red background in which the symbol of the sickle and hammer and a yellow star in the upper left corner of the flag appear. The communist flag was adopted in 1923 and its design has evolved over time. The last version of the red flag was adopted in 1980 until the complete dissolution of the Union in 1991!

It was the national flag and the commercial and state flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics: the largest communist federal state ever to exist in the world! From the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, this vast territory extended over thousands of kilometres covering eleven time zones! It included 15 federated republics (European and Asian countries) between 1954 and 1991: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and finally Uzbekistan. The geographical map of the USSR was incredibly large and represented 1/6 of the world's land! This communist regime was led by a single party: the Communist Party of the Soviet Union consecutively led by men with iron hands, including the most important of the Politburo Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev!

We cannot really understand the symbolism of the Soviet communist flag without having some elementary notions about the political doctrine of communism from socialism and Marxism and its Soviet version: Bolshevism!

To summarize, the color red symbolized the blood of the defenders of the popular revolution and the color of "basic" communism, that thought movement born after the First World War that advocated a collectivist social organization and the end of capitalism. The red flag today is still considered the communist emblem par excellence!

The sickle and hammer are highly symbolic symbols and representative of the Leninist vision of communism and represent the union of the workers proletariat (hammer) and peasants (sickle), more broadly the union of the "workers" who were to unite against the elites: the famous class of the "proletariat" according to Marx' ideology.

The last symbol of the Soviet flag is the red star with golden outlines which is the emblem of the Red Army: the revolutionary army which was created by the Bolsheviks to defeat the former Russian empire during the Russian Revolution. It was following the October Revolution and the fall of imperial Russia from the Tsars that Russia became the first Marxist socialist country in history! The flag of the USSR will fly for no less than 68 years until the complete dismantling of the Soviet Socialist Union!
