The particularity of the American flag, the famous starred banner, is that it has been endowed throughout its history with an additional star each time a new Member State enters the Union.

The 43-star United States flag was adopted following the accession of the American states of Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington.

The 43-star American flag was in effect from 1890 to 1891 and it replaced the 38-star flag and was succeeded by the 44-star flag.

Today, the official US flag is adorned with 50 stars representing the 50 American states of the USA.

Find all the evolution of the star banner in the history of the United States from its beginnings with the 13-star flag of the 13 founding states to its final 50-star shape in effect since 1960 in our section dedicated to American historical flags!
