The flag of Brittany consists of nine horizontal black and white stripes and a white canton with eleven ermine cantons. Known as the "Gwenn ha du" which literally means "White and Black" in the Breton language. It is one of the emblems of the Brittany region, an administrative region located in the northwest of France including the departments of Côtes d'Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan.

This civil flag and maritime merchant flag of dimension 2:3 was designed by the Breton architect and activist Morvan Marchal in 1923. The flag of Brittany today is the symbol of Brittany as a whole, as much as a French administrative region, a geographical and historical area, as a cultural identity. First considered as a subversive flag by the French authorities. It was the symbol of the Breton movement called the « Emsav » (a political movement that advocated the promotion of Breton culture, autonomy until Brittany's political independence). It was in the 1970s that the use of Breton Gwenn became widely popular at all levels of Breton society.

In vexillology and heraldic science, the specificity of the flag of Brittany lies in the field sown with ermine cantons (11 on the flag). This two-coloured composition, generally black and white, represents an animal fur. The ermine fly is actually a stylized pattern representing the ermine fur tail sludge (small animal) that was sewn onto clothing.

The ermine cantons are recurring elements in the history of the coats of arms and flags of Brittany. They are also found on the finished banner (coat of arms of Brittany and flag of the Dukes of Brittany). Other historical Breton symbols include the Kroaz Du flag, which dates back to the Middle Ages (black cross on a white background), and the triskell (symbol of three intertwined spirals of Celtic Art). One of the flags that is also very famous today is the Melen Ha Gwer, the flag of the supporters of the Nantes football team. This green flag on a yellow background also takes up the motif of the official black and white flag.
