Scottish Flag Sale: Discover the origins and meaning of all Scottish flags
Purchase of the national flag of Scotland: the flag at the Cross of St Andrew
The Scottish flag consists of a white cross on a blue background. It is one of the symbols of Scotland, one of the nations of Great Britain that makes up the United Kingdom with England, Northern Ireland and Wales. According to the code used by the International Federation of Vexillological Associations, it is represented by the vexillological symbol, i.e. it is both the Scottish national flag at all levels on land (State, Civil, Military) and the national naval flag at all levels in the sea (State, Civil, Navy). It is one of the oldest flags in the world whose origins date back to the 9th century AD.
The Scottish flag is one of the world's cruciferous flags: all the flags of the world that display the symbol of the Christian cross, symbolizing Christ's crucifixion. The flag of Scotland carries the cross of Saint Andrew, an apostle and martyr considered to be the patron saint of the Scottish country. According to medieval legend, it is said that it was during a battle between King Oengus, King of Picts and Scots and King Athelstan, King of Angels that the symbol sent by Saint Andrew appeared to King Oengus to indicate future victory.
The flag at the cross of Saint Andrew consists of a white saltire on a blue background (an x-shaped cross), in heraldic language. It is said that it blasphemes in azure on a silver saltire. Present on the flag of Scotland, it is also found on other flags such as the flag of Nova Scotia, one of Canada's provinces with the cross in reverse colours and the coat of arms of Scotland.
The other famous Scottish flag: discover the royal banner with the crawling lion
One of the other symbols used by the Scottish people since the 12th century by kings to this day is the creeping lion flag, a royal banner of Scotland. The Scottish heraldic shield consists of gold with a lion crawling Gules armed and lampasked Azure surrounded by a double-flowered and counter-floral tressure. What is this gibberish, you might ask? These are simply the words used in Heraldry, the science of blazon, to say that it is a red (crawling) standing lion (gules) with claws and blue (azure) tongue on a yellow (gold) shield, all surrounded by an inner line that does not touch the edges of the shield (tressure) decorated with ornamental flower shapes (the fleurons).
