Discovering KURDISTAN, the country of the Kurdish people!
The "Kurdish country" is a country that is not recognized by the international community or regime, but it is a region of the world in Central Asia that is home and refuge to an entire population!
Indeed, the Kurdish people are a large ethnic minority in the world with their own culture and kurdish language! There are about 30 million Kurds who have lived in this region of Central Asia for centuries and centuries.
These people are mainly of Muslim faith and of Aryan origin. A particular curiosity due to the fact that Kurds live in different countries to this day: some use the Cyrillic alphabet, others the Latin alphabet and others the Arabic script to write their language. What unifies the Kurds is rather their common Muslim and Sunni culture!
The vast territory of Kurdistan covers some 500,000 km2, it is a region of mountains and high plateaus that crosses Turkey in the west, Syria, Iraq and Iran in the east. There are also people of Kurdish origin or community in Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and some "countries in -stan" such as Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Nowadays, we often talk about four main regions: Iranian Kurdistan, Iraqi Kurdistan (kurds in Iraq in the kurdish region of Iraq), Syrian and Turkish Kurdistan!
Flag story: the Kurdish flag: all our models for sale!
The flag of Kurdistan is not the same in all regions: thus there are models of different flags: the flag of Iraqi Kurdistan, the flag of Iranian Kurdistan and the Turkish Kurdish flag!
The flag of Iraqi Kurdistan is certainly the most famous: it is the flag of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (also called GRK). This region in northern Iraq is overwhelmingly inhabited by Kurds and has its own parliament: the Kurdistan Parliament. All Kurdish authorities have taken up residence in Erbil, the regional capital.
This flag serves as an unofficial flag for the Iraqi Kurdistan Government region! Its composition: a three-coloured flag with three horizontal stripes of equal height in red, white and green and a sun with 21 yellow rays in the centre of the flag; its dimensions: a rectangular flag with a 2/3 ratio.
The symbolism of the Kurdish flag evokes values and notions dear to the people! Thus the colour red represents courage and fighting spirit of the people as well as the blood of the Kurdish martyrs. The white band is the serenity, prosperity and peace to which the people aspire! The green colour evokes the green nature of the beautiful landscapes of Kurdistan: the plains, the hills and especially the Kurdish mountains.
The particularity of this flag of the world is its wide sun in the center which diffuses a large quantity of rays! Unlike other flags of the world: the yellow colour and the sun have nothing to do with climate but rather with the very ancient origins of the Kurdish people: Zoroastrianism! This ancient monotheistic religion of Central Asia considered the sun and sacred fire as divine symbols, symbols of light and eternal wisdom! Did you know that this old religion is undergoing a current revival? As a result of the jihadist drive in Iraq and the Islamic state, new followers are "turning" towards the sacred fire and in particular many Kurds! In Iraqi Kurdish law, everyone has the right to practice their own religion.
The sun has 21 rays to symbolize the date of the Kurdish New Year, which is celebrated every year on March 21 for the arrival of spring!
