Halloween: a holiday with very distant origins!

The origins of Halloween go back at least 2500 years since this holiday is inspired by the Celtic festival Samain. This festival originally celebrated the transition from one year to another and it was believed that during this night of transition the border between the world of the dead and the world of the living was opened. The candy hunt or trick-or-treat, much anticipated by the children, was borrowed from Scottish, Irish and English traditions such as 'guising' or 'mumming', which consisted of dressing up and telling a story, singing a rhyme or doing a card trick in exchange for a candy. Children dressed up and going from house to house during the Halloween party will symbolize the souls of the deceased who visit the world of the living. If in the past, children used to dress up in scary costumes such as a vampire, a zombie or a wicked witch, nowadays they opt for their favourite characters and can be found dressed as a fireman, butterflies, a life size bunny as well as in superhero costumes such as the Avengers.

What about the Jack-O-lantern ?

Because if there is a universal symbol of the Halloween night it is obviously the famous pumpkin lantern also known as Jack-O-Lantern which is an essential part of Halloween decorations! This tradition also comes from an old Irish tradition based on the old folk tale of Stingy Jack who sold his soul for a penny, dubbed the devil and whose soul was condemned to wander round the earth with only a burning coal to light his way. The tradition earlier consisted in digging turnips to plant a candle. The turnips were quickly replaced by pumpkins, which are much easier to carve and can be found in abundance at this time of year. Pumpkin carving hence became an essential tradition of Halloween.
