How is the beach flag used?

The beach flag that can be seen flying during the summer period on the coast, busy beaches or different swimming areas is a sign used by the rescue services in charge of preventive surveillance, to inform of the dangers and ensure the safety of all swimmers, both children and adults, and thus avoid the various accidents that can occur at a swimming area. This signalling equipment (an isosceles triangle flag) must be placed in plain view and must be raised on a mast, in the absence of its safety signs, the public is considered to be swimming at its own risk.

Understand the color code of the different beach flags with AZ Flag

AZ flag offers you a range of flames and swimming flags of dimensions 150x100cm with the following colours:

The green flag informs holidaymakers and swimmers that swimming is permitted and supervised (nearby first aid station, lifeguard) and that there are no particular dangers in the delimited area due to good sea or swimming conditions.

The orange flag is to be raised to indicate a dangerous swim, but monitored in the demarcated area. Swimmers, surfers and water sports enthusiasts should therefore exercise extreme caution when raising the orange beach flag. Generally it indicates sub-optimal conditions that require caution: moderate winds, threatening storms, rather strong waves, nevertheless swimming is still tolerated.  This orange colour may indicate polluted waters, the presence of floating elements in the water or dangerous animals on the shore such as jellyfish. When jellyfish are present, it is usually accompanied by a second white flag.

The red flag warns of the ban on swimming on the entire beach due to bad weather and sea conditions: swell, strong wind, waves, thunderstorms, strong currents. It may also indicate the absence of the swimming supervision service considered high risk (outside beach hours by the lifeguard, for example). The various swimmers as well as the sportsmen (kitesurfing, kayaking, pedal boat, paddle boat, sailing, sliding, scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, water skiing, rowing, windsurfing) must also take into account the red flag in order not to risk accidents or drowning. A good little thing to know: did you know that when someone swims when the red flag is flying, rescuers have the right to contact the police or local authorities to force the swimmer out of the water?

The blue flag is placed on each side of the beach, this blue flag delimits the supervised swimming area. For people with children, supervised swimming does not mean that you should be less vigilant.

The yellow flag is a bit like the orange flag, it is used to announce to beach users that swimming is not recommended due to water pollution or the presence of jellyfish.

You will also find the rectangular black and white flag warning of a land wind making swimming and boating unsafe.

Remember that holidays, beautiful fine sandy beaches and idyllic surroundings do not mean that it is safe! In addition to beach flags, it may be interesting for a holidaymaker to go to the nearest first aid or surveillance station to collect various information to make his swimming and activities safer: beach map, reminder of the colour code of beach flags, date, air and water temperature, 24-hour beach forecasts and weather, local hazards, tide times, municipal regulations concerning swimming, boating and fishing, various safety tips to be observed in a given place.
