Purchase of Irish flags: discover the whole history of the Irish flag

The Irish flag consists of three equal vertical stripes of green, white and orange. It is one of the symbols of the Republic of Ireland, a member country of the European Union since 1973. Used as a civil and state flag and as a civil and naval badge, the tricolour national flag has a symbolism rooted in the history of Ireland, and more precisely in the desire to appease the many religious wars that opposed the Irish throughout their history. The green band of the flag, this colour traditionally associated with the Emerald Island, represents the Irish Catholic national liberation movement and more broadly Ireland of Gaelic culture. The orange colour refers to the descendants of the 17th century British settlers (a group that supported William of Orange in the War of the Two Kings, 1689-91) and therefore to English Protestant Ireland. The white stripe in the middle of the flag evokes the hope of peace between the two groups. This flag is therefore intended to be a symbol of peace and fraternity for a united Ireland.

It was on 7th March 1848, at a meeting held in Waterford that the leader of the Young Ireland Thomas movement and Irish revolutionary Francis Meagher proposed the version of the Irish tricolour flag to the Young Ireland movement: the tangible representation of a lasting truce and a fraternity to be maintained between green and orange, between Irish Catholics and Protestants, between Irish of Gaelic culture and English Irish, between North and South. It became the national flag of the Free State of Ireland in 1922 following the ratification of the Treaty of London.  It officially became the official flag of the Parliamentary Republic of Ireland (Eire or Ireland) in the 1937 Constitution.

Other Irish flags such as the flag of the Irish Presidency (blue background) or the Green Flag, the Irish maritime flag (green background), use the harp symbol in their centre. Gaelic harps, and particularly Brian Boru's famous harp, evoke traditional Irish music, a pride of the country that is well rooted in Irish death and customs. They can also be found on Irish euro coins but also for the promotion of the famous dark beer Guinness.
