Of all the world flags, the flag of Germany or the German Flag is a tricolour flag which consists of three equal horizontal stripes or bands displaying the national colours of Germany namely black, red and gold. It was designed and first hoisted in 1919 when Germany was known as the Weimar Republic. It is one of the symbols of the Federal Republic of German territories, the most populous country in the European Union. The German national flag which contains only the black-red-gold tricolour, was introduced as part of the (West) German constitution in 1949. Following the creation of separate government and military flags in later years, the plain tricolour is now used as the German civil flag and civil ensign. This flag is also used by non-federal authorities to show their connection to the federal government. The German democratic republic has three types of flags namely the Civil flag, the government flag and the German war flags.

The government flag of Germany is officially named as the Dienstflagge der Bundesbehörden (state flag of the federal authorities) or Bundesdienstflagge. Introduced in 1950, the government flag is the civil flag with the Bundesschild, that is the Federal Shield. The Bundesschild is a variant of the coat of arms of Germany and the main changes are the symbol of the eagle and the shape of the shield. The Bundesschild is rounded at the base, whereas the standard coat of arms is pointed. The government flag can be used by federal government authorities only and it is considered as an offence if used by others. However, public use of flags similar to the Bundesdienstflagge is allowed and such flags are used at international sporting events.

Use of the German flag

Many public buildings in Germany (especially in German Capital) use the flags vertically in addition to the normal horizontal format. Town halls fly their town flag together with the national flag in this way and many town flags in Germany are only in vertical form without any specific proportions. Since the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) are a federal authority, the Bundesdienstflagge is also used as the German war flag on land. In 1956, the flag of the German Navy was introduced.

Going back into the flag history, in 1919, the flag was first adopted as the national flag of modern Germany and during the short-lived Weimar Republic, until 1933. On 23rd May 1949, following the enactment of the (West) German constitution on 23 May 1949 (after the First World War), the black-red-gold tricolour was adopted as the flag for the Federal Republic of Germany. The German war flag bear the German coat of arms with a black eagle. The coat of arms of the Federal Republic since the 1950s, is also used by the German government and can be found on passports.

The symbolisms of the colours of the modern Germany flag are associated with the republican democracy first proposed in 1848, formed after World War I, which represent German unity and freedom. During the Weimar Republic, the black-red-gold colours were the emblem of the democratic, centrist, and republican political parties, which was formed by members of the Social Democratic, the Centre and the Democratic parties to defend the republic against extremists on the right and left.
