The flag of Greece consists of nine horizontal stripes of identical size in blue and white alternating with a white cross in the upper left canton. It is one of the symbols of the Hellenic Republic, a European country considered by its history as the cradle of European culture and democracy. The Greek flag is nicknamed "I Galano Lefki" which means blue and white. The flag of Greece is both the national flag and the official maritime flag of the Hellenic country. It is part of the symbols of Greece with the coat of arms of Greece, the Greek national anthem "Imnos pros tin Eleftherian," the hymn to freedom and the famous motif of the Greek meander.

Greek flag sale: the whole history and specificities of the Greek state flag

Among all flags, the Greek flag is part of the so-called "canton flags" of the world, i. e. it has a square partition placed at one of the corners (usually the upper right corner on the mast side) like the flags of the United States, Chile, Malaysia or Australia. Adopted by the National Assembly of Epidaurus in 1978 (the first assembly of what would become the Hellenic Parliament), its 2:3 measurements and graphic configuration were fixed in 1822.

The white cross of St. George on a blue square affixed in the canton of the flag is the symbol of the Christian faith of the Orthodox Church. It also represents victory. Traditionally, it is associated with a vision that the Roman Emperor Constantine I (who ruled over a very vast territory including present-day Greece) would have seen in the sky during a battle in Rome: a cross indicating victory against Maxentius, another Roman emperor and ensuring his domination over the eastern part of the empire: the new Byzantine empire.

The nine blue and white stripes of the flag refer to the nine verses of the Greek slogan Ελευθερία ή θάνατος : in Greek language freedom or death. Greek currency used in the fight for Greek independence in 1821. It is also said that the five blue stripes recall the five seas that border the country: Mediterranean Sea, Ionian Sea, Crete, Thrace Sea and Aegean Sea. As for the white stripes, they would be a reminder of the fustanelle, a pleated skirt worn in the Balkan regions traditionally.
