Buying and Selling of the Dutch flag: discover the history and symbolism of the Dutch flag

The Dutch flag consists of three horizontal stripes in red, white and blue. It is one of the symbols of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the country of Europe whose average altitude is the lowest in the world with more than a quarter of the country below sea level.

With a 2:3 ratio proportion, the tricolour flag of the Netherlands is a variant of the original flag of Holland which had been chosen as the symbol of the nation the Prinsenvlag, the famous banner of the Princes (available for purchase on our online store): a tricolour flag with horizontal orange, white and blue stripes, of heraldic origin. This flag had been used as a national flag and state flag between 1572 and 1795 by Prince William I of Orange-Nassau during the period of revolt when the Netherlands wanted to free itself from the control of the Spanish.

The Dutch national flag was adopted in 1937 using the colours red, white, blue, formerly the colours of the Batave Republic, a sister republic of the French Republic between 1795 and 1806, but also a reminder of the blue white red colours of the French flag in force between 1810 and 1813 in the Netherlands. Today, the flag of the Netherlands is both officially the national flag and the maritime flag of Holland. It should be noted that it can be confused with the flag of Luxembourg and to distinguish them the two countries use a different shade of blue: a light blue for Luxembourg and an ultramarine blue for the flag of Holland.

Where can you buy the most durable and resistant Netherlands flags?

The flags of the Netherlands are available in several models on our flag store online: the official Dutch red white blue flag, the historical flag of the Royal Netherlands flag, the former flag of Prince Orange Nassau, but also the official flag with the coat of arms of the Netherlands in the centre. Inspired by the heraldic coats of arms of the House of Nassau, the Dutch coat of arms includes three lions: a lion crowned with gold, lampasked and armed with gules (heraldic terms for a tongue and red claws) with a sword in the centre of an azure blue shield. This central crest is supported by two other lions, underneath the crest is the motto of the Orange Nassau house: "I will maintain". The large coat of arms of the Netherlands also includes a red coat lined with ermine and surmounted by a royal crown that includes the design of the Dutch coat of arms.

You will also find in our selection the Bonaire flag, an island in the Caribbean Netherlands, whose capital is Kralendijk, located in the Caribbean Leeward Islands off Curaçao and the Venezuelan coast. The flag of Bonaire Island is a yellow, white and blue tiered bar flag (i. e. with oblique stripes). In the white band is a red star with 6 branches that recalls the 6 localities of the Island surrounded by a compass, a sign associated with the naval history of Bonaire. You can also discover other national flags, country flags, international flags, advertising flags, sports flags, historical flags and many other world flags.
