The Congo flag consists of a diagonal yellow band, followed by two triangles, one green and the other red. The green triangle is located on the mast side: the side closest to the flagpole.

It is one of the symbols of the Republic of Congo with the lion and elephant, the national anthem "La Congolaise" and the coat of arms of the Republic of Congo. This Central African country, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, gained its independence from France on 15 August 1960 (a country not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a former Belgian colony, nicknamed Congo Kinshasa). It is located on the equator line of the African continent with Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo as its neighbouring countries.

The flag of the Congolese Republic, measuring 2/3, has been used as a national flag (State/Civilian/Army) and national maritime flag (State/Civilian/Military Navy) since its adoption on 18 August 1958. It was abandoned for a time between 1970 and 1991 in favour of a Soviet flag for the People's Republic of Congo. It was re-adopted in 1991 when the country was proclaimed "Republic of Congo" in the country's brief attempt to establish democracy.
