The Kenya flag consists of three horizontal stripes: black, red, and white and black green with an emblem in the centre. It is the symbol of the Republic of Kenya, a country in East Africa often considered as the cradle of humanity due to the many hominid fossils that have been found there.

All about the origins and history of the Kenyan flag !

The flag of Kenya is nowadays considered as the State and War flag of Kenya as well as its State and merchant flag. This 2/3 ratio flag was adopted on 12th December 1963 on the occasion of the proclamation of the independence of Kenya, formerly a colony of the United Kingdom.

Its composition is based mainly on the flag of KANU (Kenya African National Union), the political party that guided Kenya towards freedom and independence. In fact, it was the leader of the party who designed this flag. His name is Jomo Kenyatta.

As for its symbolism, it is assigned the following values:

For the Kenyan people, it is the colour black. For the blood spilled during the struggle for independence, it is the color red. For the country's natural resources, it is the colour green. The two white stripes that divide the three colours symbolize the colour of peace.

The central emblem represents a Maasai shield and 2 traditional spears. It has been added to represent the defence of the tradition of Kenyan values and culture and the freedom of its people. The two spears also echo the name of the flag designer Jomo Kenyatta, whose name has this meaning: "Kenya's flaming javelin".
