Libya's flags from every angle: history, use, origin

The Libyan flag consists of three colours arranged in horizontal red, black and green stripes of different sizes, the central black strip being wider than the other two. The flag of Libya has a white crescent in its centre and a white five-pointed star. This flag was first adopted in 1951 when Libya obtained its independence from Italy and readopted on 23 August 2011 following the Libyan civil war that took place during the Arab Spring and marked the fall of Gaddafi. This flag was first adopted by the rebels as the royal flag of Libya (Kingdom of Libya between 1951 and 1969).

It is currently one of the symbols of the State of Libya, a North African country located between Algeria, Tunisia, Chad, Niger, Egypt and Sudan and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. Libya is an oil country that is part of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), the Arab League and the Arab Maghreb Union.

Its three pan-Arab colours evoke the unity of the three traditional Libyan provinces: the Tripolitan province of the northwest (green), Fezzan province of the southwest (red) and Cyrenaica in the east (black) when Libya was still a monarchy under the aegis of King Idris I (Emirate of Cyrénaïque). It should be noted that the crescent and the star used together formed the ancient heraldic emblem of Libya. Nowadays, these symbols of Islam appear on Libya's biometric passports and they are no longer recognized as official state coats of arms.

Under Muammar Gaddafi, the old Libyan flag between 1977 and 2011 consisted of a simple green background when Libya was still the "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya".
