Some details on Mauritania, a West African country
Mauritania is located in the western part of the geographical map of Africa, the region most commonly known as West Africa between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west and the Sahara desert to the north.
Mauritania shares borders with the following neighbouring countries: Algeria to the north, Mali to the east, Senegal to the south. Mauritania has a coastal area with the Atlantic Ocean of more than 800 km to the west of the country and also borders a large part of the Western Sahara in the northern part of the country (areas claimed by Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic).
Mauritania was for a long time a former French colony that gained independence in 1960. Its name comes from Mauritania, the territory of the "Moors" under the aegis of the Roman Empire of Antiquity. Today, it is officially recognized as an independent state of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania with the national motto "Honour Fraternity Justice". Mauritania is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League and the Arab Maghreb Union.
Being multiethnic, the Mauritanian republic has a population of nearly 4 million inhabitants made up of various ethnic groups such as the Fulani, Bambaras, Sinks and Wolofs, 99% of whom are Muslims. Arabic, hassaniya (Mauritanian Arabic), Soninke, Wolof, Fulani and French are spoken.
All the secrets of the flag of Mauritania: colours, symbolism, history
Flag of Mauritania or Mauritanian banner as well as Mauritanian table and car flags are to be discovered on AZ Flag.
The Mauritanian flag with a green background is one of the world's vexillary emblems with the colours of pan-Africanism (green, yellow, red), as are many African flags, including the Ethiopian flag, the Ghana flag, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Togo.
It is also decorated with a golden crescent moon surmounted by a five-pointed star of a golden yellow colour: the half moon and the star as well as the green colour symbolize the Muslim religion, number one in the country.
The golden yellow colour also refers to the vast desert expanse of the Sahara and its sand dunes as well as all the country's mineral resources (such as the country's iron and gold mines).
The flag of Mauritania has long been made up of a single green background and the moon and crescent (from 1959 to 2017). Since 2017, following a referendum, two horizontal red stripes have been added to the lower and upper parts of the flag. They represent the blood spilled by patriots.
The flag of Mauritania is the national flag and the national maritime flag of the country!
