Discover all the secrets of the history and colours of the Nigerian flag !

Nigeria is a country located in West Africa that borders the famous Gulf of Guinea. It is the 7th most populous country in the world and the first African country in terms of population! It is inhabited by Nigerians (not to be confused with the inhabitants of Niger: the Nigerians). Nigeria is a former British colony that gained independence in October 1960.

Nigeria's neighbouring countries are Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin from east to west. It is a very active member of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States).

The Nigerian flag was adopted by the country on the same day it gained independence and became a Federal Republic of Nigeria on 1st October 1960.

The flag of Nigeria is a two-coloured flag that consists of three vertical stripes of the same width: two green stripes at the ends, one white strip in the centre. It is officially the national flag of the country. This rectangular flag is measured in a height/width ratio of ½

It was designed by a student following a competition launched by the country. The color green is the representation of agriculture as an essential resource of the country and the color white is peace and unity. According to other explanations, it was the image of the Niger River surrounded by rich green and lush forests that inspired the young student for its graphic composition.
