Sao Tome and Principe in brief:

Did you know that Sao Tome and Principe is one of the smallest countries on the African continent?

In the heart of the South Atlantic in the Gulf of Guinea, this African archipelago is located off the coast of Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. This African country and former Portuguese colony is made up of two main islands (you guessed it right !) named Sao Tome Island and Principe Island!

If you are tempted by a trip to Sao Tome and Principe, sometimes called the "Islands of the World" or "Chocolate Island", you will be seduced by the wild beauty of this authentic volcanic archipelago, its many cocoa plantations, its lush vegetation, its beautiful beaches calling for relaxation and idleness and especially the kindness of the Santomian people!

Flag of Sao Tome, its composition and symbolism

The São Toméan flag consists of two horizontal green stripes and a yellow strip in the middle with a red triangle on the luff side (left side opposite the leaf). It is decorated with two black stars in the centre of the yellow band. It was adopted in 1975 on the occasion of the country's independence from the Portuguese Empire. This flag was first the flag of the country's independence fighters and then became the national flag as well as the national flag. Like many former colonized countries of Africa (flag Ethiopia, Senegal, Congo, Benin...), it bears the emblematic colours of pan-Africanism: green-yellow-red.

It is generally interpreted as follows: the colour red refers to the blood shed for independence, yellow represents the country's major economic source: cocoa tree and green represents the country's tropical nature.

The two black stars represent the two main islands that make up the archipelago: Sao Tome and Principe! As for the colour black, it was chosen to illustrate Sao Tome's belonging to the African continent!
