Among all international flags, the flag of Tunisia consists of a red background with a solid white circle in the centre including a red crescent moon and a red star. Going back into the flag history of Tunisia, the Tunisian flag is one of the symbols of the Tunisian Republic, a North African Maghreb country integrated into the main international bodies. The Islamic symbol of the moon and the crescent is found on many flags of Muslim countries and very often on all flags of countries of the former Ottoman Empire. The state flag of Tunisia was adopted on 20th October 1827 and its exact ratio of 2:3 as well as the official measurements of the design of the white disc containing the moon and the star were ratified by law in 1999. It is officially the national flag and maritime flag of the Tunisian Republic.

In Tunisian territoties, it is common to see the national flag of Tunisia flying above public, diplomatic and military buildings. On the Place de la Kasbah, the most famous square in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, you can see the official flag raised at the top of the central Kasbah memorial. The parade of the Tunisian flag in the streets of Tunisia takes place every year for five important days on the Tunisian calendar, particularly on Independence Day and the day of the proclamation of the Republic.

In the Muslim tradition, the five-pointed star symbolizes the 5 pillars of Islam and the crescent at the end of Ramadan and its last crescent moon.

Some see in the red background of the Tunisian flag the image of the blood of the martyrs who perished during the Ottoman conquest in 1574 of Tunisian territory, which was under the aegis of the Spanish empire. According to others, the red colour symbolizes wisdom and light that spreads throughout Islamic civilization. The white colour is a symbol of synonymous with universal peace.

The crescent moon represents the unity of the world's Muslims. Others consider that the white disc of the centre would be a sun and the red an emblematic element that represents the Tunisian resistance against the supremacy of Turkey.
