A brief history of the Bahamas flag

The flag of the Bahamas is part of the world flags of the Caribbean zone with the flags of countries or regions of the West Indies. This flag, which uses a national land flag, was adopted on 10th July 1973, the date on which this former British colony became independent of the United Kingdom and formed what is now known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.

This national flag differs from the three other flags of the Bahamas in use today: the civil flag, the state flag and the military naval flag. These three flags include a central cross of Saint George (red on white or white on red) of different styles depending on the nautical flags and the national flag in the canton.

Focus on its colours and design!

The Bahamian flag consists of three horizontal stripes, two blue and one yellow and a black triangle on the left. It carries a strong cultural, political and regional symbolism!

The two blue stripes symbolize the aquatic life that surrounds all the islands and islets of the archipelago, a great source of diversity. This blue tint, which is turquoise in colour, also reminds us of the ocean's colour variations around the Bahamian islands.

The yellow band is similar to the golden sand of the 700 islands of the Bahamas, the sun shining and the key natural resources of the Bahamas.

The black triangular shape corresponds to the unity that binds the Bahamian population from all walks of life (3 sides of the triangle representing the 3 main populations - Africans, Europeans and Chinese). It is also a badge that represents the country's determination to develop all the resources of their country: both land and sea!
