Buy a Chilean flag for your patriotic event and discover the history of the Chilean national flag

Among all flags of the world, the national flag of Chile is one of the vexillary emblems of the planet that bears an astronomical symbol: in Spanish, it is nicknamed "l'estrella solitaria" (literally: the solitary star because of the five pointed star (white) that can be seen floating on the flag).

The Chile flag consists of two horizontal white and red stripes with a blue square and a star in the upper left canton on the side of the flagpole on which the official flags are raised.

This blue-white-red tricolour flag is one of the symbols of the Republic of Chile, a country that has the particularity of being tricontinental because, in addition to South America, it has territories in Oceania and Antarctica. According to the grids of the FIAV (International Federation of Vexillological Associations), its use is as much land as seafaring because it is both the national flag and the official nautical flag of Chile. Only the presidential flag in Chile has another design with the Chilean coats of arms in its centre with the condor and the huemul (deer from the southern Andes) and the famous national motto "Por la razon y la fuerza" (By reason or by force).

The flag of Chile was adopted on 18th October 1817, one year before Chile's independence from the Spanish Empire was signed.

The Chilean flag, its symbolism and colours in light

The blue color is an emblem of the Pacific Ocean that borders the coasts of Chile and the sky of Chile.

The white colour symbolizes the Cordilleras of the Andes, the longest mountain range in the world and its beautiful snow-covered peaks.

The red color represents the blood that flowed during the struggle for access to Independence and freedom of the country. It should be noted that most of the South American countries controlled by Spain obtained their independence after several military clashes between 1811 and 1825.

The white star as the embodiment of the powers of the Chilean state and its unitary status (in contrast to national flags with several stars representing federal states).
