The Colombia state flag is composed of three horizontal bands: yellow, blue and red. It is one of the symbols of the Republic of Colombia, the third most important Spanish-speaking country on the planet, with the Colombian coats of arms and the Colombian national anthem based on the poem "Himno Patriotico", the orchid, the Quidio wax palm tree and the Andean condor. It was on November 26, 1861 that the tricolour flag of Colombia was adopted. It is both the national flag and the flag of the country's State.

Discover the origins and meaning of the colours of the Colombian flag
Originally, yellow symbolized America, red Spain which was separated by the blue band representing the Atlantic Ocean. The modern official version considers that the yellow band, which is twice as high as the other 2 shades, evokes the riches of the Colombian land: the sun, sovereignty, justice and harmony. The blue colour refers to the Colombian sky, its rivers and its two oceans. The colour red recalls the blood of heroes shed during the battles for the liberation of Colombia, it is also the colour of love, strength, progress and power. The chromatic composition of the three primary colours yellow, blue and red of the flag was imagined by General Francisco de Miranda, one of the leaders of the Latin American independence movement, who would have chosen these primary colours because they are the most visible colours of the rainbow.
The flag of the Colombian armed forces, the flag of the Armada War Flag and the Colombian Presidential Flag contain the coat of arms of Colombia, which features an Andean condor with wings spread holding a branch of laurel in its beak and bearing the official motto of Colombia: Libertad y Orden (Freedom and Order). On the coat of arms, there is also a gold grenade that recalls the country's former name: New Grenada, horns of abundance evoking the richness of the land, two ships evoking the two oceans that border the Colombian coast: the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The Colombian coat of arms is the most important emblem of Colombia, it is intrinsically and intimately linked to the country's history and culture and that is why it is dear to Colombians.
