Buy a Costa Rican flag and go back in time with the history of the national flag
The national flag of Costa Rica, adopted in 1906, is a flag of fairly ancient origins since its design was taken from the old flag of the country used in 1848. This three colour flag of standard proportions 3/5 (height/width) is the vexillary emblem of Costa Rica.
It consists of two horizontal blue stripes on the lower and upper parts, two white stripes and a wider red strip in the centre. There are two official variants of the flag of Costa Rica: the national flag, state flag and war flag also includes the coat of arms of Costa Rica slightly off-centre on the flagpoles side and the flag and civil flag which is a tricolour with five bands of simple colours and without national insignia.
Costa Rica has always had white and sky blue flags for several centuries. When the national flag was designed in 1848, the blue-white red colours were chosen to pay tribute to revolutionary ideas straight from Europe and in particular from the country of human rights with its French tricolour.
The flag of Costa Rica, its symbolism and its colours from every angle
The colour blue refers to several ideas and geographical realities of the country. It has been assigned human values and ideas to pursue such as perseverance, idealism, opportunities, intellect and the height of ideals. The blue colour also represents two natural elements that Costa Ricans consider important in their territories: the sky and the two oceans that surround the country from side to side (the Pacific Ocean in the west, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east).
The white color refers to wisdom, peace, happiness as well as the beautiful clarity of Costa Rica's celestial expanse.
The red colour, as you might have guessed it, is first of all a tribute to the blood of the fighters for Independence from the Spanish colonial empire. It also evokes the cements of Costa Rican culture and its people: its warmth, joy and generosity.
