The flag of the Dominican Republic from every angle - History and Composition

The flag of the Dominican Republic was officially adopted on 6th November 1863 by the "República Dominicana". The country of the Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with its neighbouring country Haiti. It consists of a large white cross dividing the flag into four rectangles of equal size in the four corners of the flag (two red vermilion and two dark blue overseas). In the centre of the cross, you can see the coat of arms of the Dominican Republic floating.

Use of the flag

According to the FIAV (International Federation of Vexillological Associations) sign directory, it is represented by the vexillological grid whose horizontal upper line designates its land uses and the lower line the sea uses of maritime flags. The rectangular flag of 2/3 is used as a national flag (civilian, State, Army) and as a State and war flag. The unchecked location of the grid means that it is not used as a flag by the Merchant Navy. The merchant marine flag has the same design without the country's coat of arms.

The red rectangle should float normally in the upper right corner of the flag, on the windward side. If a flag is hoisted upside down with the red quarter in the upper left corner on the mast side, it is a sign that the country is in a state of deep distress or worse: in a state of war.

Meaning of the Dominican colours and the national coat of arms

Blue symbolizes freedom, red represents fire and blood of the struggle for independence and finally the color white and the cross are the symbols of God and faith. The coat of arms of the Dominican Republic consists of a shield with an open Bible (Gospel according to John) at the centre, topped by a golden Christian cross. The Bible page is open to the biblical verse of John 8:32: "The truth has given you ». A blue banner is placed above the coat of arms with the Dominican national motto written on it: "Dios, Patria, libertad" (God, Fatherland, Freedom). The shield is surrounded by laurel leaves to the sinister (sign of immortality) and a palm branch to the dexter (sign of freedom) joined by a red knot (sign of glory). Below the crest floats a red ribbon with the inscription "República Dominicana".
