The Easter Island flag is not like any other flag of the world. Indeed, the flag of Easter Island is not a country flag, since Easter Island is an island of Chile in the Pacific Ocean and carries the Chilean national flag, but the flag of the Rapanui people, the local Polynesian ethnic group.

This beautiful unofficial flag features a red stylized "reimiro" motif on a white background, an old pectoral jewel worn by women from Easter Island before.

The reimiro, the main motif of the Easter Island flag, kézako?

As mentioned above, the indigenous population of Easter Island is made up of the Polynesian ethnic group of Rapa Nui or Rapanuis. This Austronesian people, who speak the Rapanui language, make up 60% of the island's population to date compared to 40% of Chileans and other inhabitants of different origins (European, Chinese or other Pacific inhabitants).

Women from the aristocracy of Easter Island used to wear the Reimiro. Etymologically this word rapa nui consists of Rei "bow" and Miro "boat". Indeed this jewel in the shape of a rather majestic crescent carried on the chest that can be seen floating on the Pascuan flag represents in fact a stylized Polynesian pirogue with two faces that can be observed at the ends of the pirogue.

Symbolically, this sign of reimiro represents the tradition, authority and importance of lineage and kinship. This flag comes from the 19th century and is and was derived from an old flag that also had a reimiro in the center with the motif of the bird man (Tangata Manu) placed at the four corners. The tangata Manu was in a way a former leader and wise man who, after a ritual of passing with a jump into the sea, became for a year the conciliator between the clans of Easter Island.
