All the secrets of the Haitian flag – Its history and composition !

The Haitian flag consists of two horizontal stripes in blue and red and the Haitian coat of arms in the centre. It is one of the symbols of the Republic of Haiti, a country in the Greater Antilles that shares the island of Hispaniola (or Santo Domingo) with the Dominican Republic. Haiti has several different territories including the Mountainous Land (main part) as well as various islands and archipelagos such as the Cayemites, Turtle Island, Gonâve.

The flag of Haiti was created in 1803 following its independence from France. It was adopted in 1820 but its first official use dates back to 1843.

Official use of the flag

According to the F.I.A.V. (International Federation of Vexillological Associations) symbol directory, it is represented by the vexillological grid, the first line of which designates its land uses and the second the sea uses of maritime flags. Here, we can see that the Haitian flag is used as a State and war flag as well as a State and Navy flag. The Haitian civil flag and civil flag lack the national coat of arms.

Meaning of Haitian colours and Haitian coat of arms

The composition of the Haitian flag is actually based on the French tricolour flag. In fact, the white central band of the French flag has been removed from it, being considered by Haitians as the representation of royalty and the white race. The two remaining pieces were tied together to form the Haitian emblem. Its symbolism was the alliance of the black and mulatto population of the island country.

The Haitian coat of arms consists of a shield with a yellow and green palm tree (palm kernel tree) surmounted by a Phrygian cap of national colour, two cannons, a drum and three guns. The coat of arms bears the motto "L'union fait la force" written in French. It is both the symbol used by the President of the Republic of Haiti and the Prime Minister.
