The flag of Jamaica consists of four green and black triangles interspersed with a yellow cross in saltire: the cross of Saint Andrew. Along with the national anthem "Jamaica, land we love", the green and black hummingbird, the Jamaican flag is one of the symbols of Jamaica, a Caribbean island made famous throughout the world by the fame of Bob Marley, a former British colony and now a member of the Commonwealth. It was adopted on August 6, 1962, the day the country achieved Official Independence from the United Kingdom, in a 1:2 ratio. The flag of Jamaica is officially the national flag and the merchant shipping flag of the country, represented by this symbol according to the symbols of the International Federation of Vexillological Associations (FIAV) which codify the use of naval flags and flags of the countries of the world.

Jamaica's green yellow black flag has a powerful symbolism. It symbolizes both the birth of the Jamaican nation, its past achievements and reflects the country's eventful history. Its emblem triumphantly displayed on many official occasions, it expresses the pride and patriotism of the Jamaican people who are very attached to their colours. This powerful motto is generally attributed to the Jamaican flag: "Hardships there are but the land is green and the sun shineth", meaning literally: "We know the trials, but the earth is green and the sun shines". Moreover, black, green and yellow are also pan-African colours on many African flags and celebrate the importance of African heritage in Jamaica.

Indeed, the colour black depicts the harsh difficulties and hardships of the past (Spanish occupation, British colonisation, triangular trade, slavery, exploitation in sugar cane plantations, coup d'état) and the colour green embodies the fertile soil of Jamaican soil, its natural resources. Finally, the yellow color is the color of the sun, synonymous of hope.
