The flag of Mexico consists of three vertical stripes of green, white and red with the emblem of the country in its center. It is one of the symbols of the United Mexican States, a Spanish-speaking country whose capital Mexico City is one of the most populated cities in the world. Adopted in 1968, the Mexican flag of 4:7 ratio, serves as both a national naval flag and a national flag. The design of the current Mexican flag was developed for the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.

Mexicans are very attached to their coat of arms which symbolizes its culture and political history. Concerning the flag history, on the Mexican coat of arms, on a rock emerging from Lake Texcoco (representing the indigenous origins of the inhabitants of Mexico), there is a flowering prickly pear, a type of cactus native to Mexico, on which an eagle is perched, devouring a snake. The Aztecs also used the same image: the only difference was that a Mexican eagle appeared: the Caraca cheriway and in European heraldry, the eagle on the flag is considered a golden eagle. However, these symbols of the Mexican eagle caraca, serpent and prickly pear come from an ancient Aztec legend which tells the story of the founding of the ancient Aztec capital: Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City (the eagle sign on the fig tree was the divine sign of good omen that would define the location of the new capital). The addition of the snake to the coat of arms remains relatively obscure. On the cactus, there are 32 thorns that symbolize the 32 states of Mexico.

As for the flag colors, they are derived from the colours of the banner of the Army of the Three Guarantees, a group of insurgents who led the war in Spain during the Mexican War of Independence from 1810 to 1821. Traditionally, the green colour represented Independence, the white colour stands for the Catholic Religion and the red colour was used to symbolize the union between Europeans and Americans and between the Spanish and the indigenous peoples of Mexico.

Later, with the adoption of secularism as a fundamental concept in Mexico, the symbolism associated with Mexican colours was reworked: green for the hope of the people, white for the pure ideals of the Mexican people and red for the blood of heroes.
