Among all flags, the flag of Peru consists of two vertical red and one white stripes. It is one of the symbols of the Republic of Peru, the 3rd largest country in South America from the former Inca empire. Along with the Peruvian flag, other national emblems include the Peruvian national anthem entitled "Somos libres, séasmoslo siempre" (We are free, we always will be!), the Peruvian coat of arms as well as traditional and unofficial symbols such as the national bird: the Peruvian rock cock, the national flower: the Cantuka and the country's animal: the vicuna.

The flag of Peru was adopted on 25th May 1825 as part of a new law on the national symbols of Peru under Simon Bolivar, the libertador, four years after Peru's independence from Spain in 1821.

This two-tone red and white flag, of 2/3 proportion, is celebrated on June 7 each year in Peru. Civil flag and merchant flag, it is not the only flag used by the Peruvian nation.  In fact, it is common for the white band in the middle of the two red bands to include other symbols of the country, such as the naval and state flag with the Peruvian coat of arms (Escudo de Armas) or the war flag with the national coat of arms (escudo nacional).

This flag has uncertain origins. It is known to have been created by General José de San Martin in 1820, but no one is sure what inspired his choice of colour. According to some, the meaning of the red and white colours correspond to the colours of the parihuanas, the red and white flamingos of Peru, others say that the red flow comes from the flag of Chile and the white colour from the flag of Argentina to honour the soldiers of foreign origin who participated in the liberation of Peru.
