Among all flags in the world, the flag of India consists of three horizontal orange (saffron color), white and green stripes and a blue wheel in its center that has 24 spokes called the Ashoka chakra. The Indian flag tirangā तिरंगा, which means tricolour or three color in Hindi, is one of the symbols of the Republic of India, the second most populous country in the world after China. Adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 22 1947, only a few days before India's independence. The 2:3 Indian flag is inspired by the flag of the Indian National Congress, one of India's largest political parties. It is considered the national flag of India, so the orange white green flag is used in the civilian, state and Indian army spheres. For its maritime flags, India uses derivatives of the British Red Ensign and White Ensign flags, direct legacies of the period of English colonialism in India.

All the secrets hidden under the symbolism and design of the Indian flag!

Did you know that it was no less than the famous Mahatma Gandhi who proposed this drawing of the flag to the Indian National Congress Party?

Sketched by an Indian peasant, the original colours of this flag were red and green ; red for Hindus and green for Muslims, a form of national unity. The central symbol was then selected by Gandhi himself. Originally it was intended to represent a "charka" wheel, the traditional device used for spinning natural fibres such as wool, flax or hemp. For Gandhi, the wheel symbol represented self-sufficiency and was also a symbol of freedom. Gandhi's ambition was to encourage all Indians (hindu, muslim or indian from other religions) or to make their own fabric by hand in order to create a self-subsistence system in order to free themselves from British hegemony.

It was only in 1931 that the order and meaning of the colours of the Indian flag were revised. The saffron color orange, representing courage and sacrifice, the white stripe is the symbol of truth and peace while the green colour which is an emblem of faith and courtesy are chosen.

It was only later that the Gandhi charka was replaced by the Ashoka Chakra, this Buddhist symbol representing the wheel of the law of the world (the wheel of Dharma evoking movement and change) under the influence of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, one of the main drafters of the Indian Constitution, Buddhist and leader of the untouchables or dalit. Moreover, did you know that the only fabric authorized for the manufacture of the Indian flag for official use is khadi, a handmade fabric made of cotton, silk or wool. The flag fabrics, after being tested, are then dyed and the Ashoka Chakra symbol is embroidered or stencilled.
