All about the use and meaning of the Indonesian flag

The Indonesian flag consists of two horizontal red and white stripes of proportional size. It is the vexillary emblem of the Republic of Indonesia, a country in Southeast Asia that consists of a thousand islands and ranks as the 4th most populous country in the world!

Along with the Indonesian coat of arms, the national anthem entitled "Indonesia Raya" (Greater Indonesia), the national motto "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" (Unity in Diversity) and unofficial emblems such as the Komodo Dragon, the Java Eagle, the Asian Scleropagus or the white frangipani flower, it is part of the national symbols of the Indonesian archipelago.

The flag of Indonesia was adopted in 1945, when the country proclaimed its independence from the Netherlands (formerly the Dutch colonial empire).

The red and white colours are a duo of colours from an ancient Javanese flag (the Island of Java, currently the most populated island in the world) from the 13th century. This flag was reportedly used during the war between Prince Jayakatwang of Keridi and the king in place Kertanegara of Singasari. The outcome of this war put an end to the kingdom of the said king to find the new kingdom of Majapahit (former kingdom of the eastern part of the island of Java which reached its peak in the 14th century AD). This two-tone flag was therefore chosen as an emblem for Indonesian nationalists to form the new nation.

Among all world flags, the flag of Indonesia is almost identical to the flag of the Principality of Monaco and only the shades of colour and proportions differ.

Captivating historical detail: it was a woman named Fatmawati of Minangkabau ethnic origin who created the first Indonesian flag! Fatmawati, who was considered a national hero of Indonesia, was the third wife of the first President of the Republic of Indonesia and the mother of the first President of Indonesia!
