The flag of Malaysia, adopted in 1963, is the national flag and the flag of the State of Malaysia. It became official the year Malaysia founded its federation with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. It should be noted that Malaysia was proclaimed an independent state in 1957 (formerly a colony of the United Kingdom).
The Malaysia flag consists of fourteen horizontal red and white stripes, followed by a blue canton in which a star and a yellow moon float. It is the vexillary emblem of the Federation of Malaysia, a country in Southeast Asia divided into two main regions separated by the South China Sea: Peninsular Malaysia, located off Sumatra (Indonesia) in the south and bordering Thailand in the north and East Malaysia in the north of Borneo (Indonesia).
Together with "Negaraku" (the national anthem called My Country), the Malaysian coat of arms, the national motto "Unity and Strength" and other Malaysian emblematic figures such as the Malaysian tiger, the Rhinoceros Hornbill or the hibiscus, the Malaysian flag forms all of Malaysia's symbols.
The Malaysian federation originally consisted of fourteen states, represented on the flag by the 14 red and white striped bands. In 1965, Singapore decided to leave the federation and become independent. The fourteen stripes on the flag were nevertheless maintained. The blue rectangular canton at the top left includes a yellow crescent moon to symbolize Islam (this is the state religion, 55% of the population of Malaysia is Muslim) and a yellow fourteen-pointed star that also symbolizes the original federal states.
