Learn more about the history of the Pakistan flag and its symbols

The Pakistan flag is officially considered as the state flag and the war flag of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. In Urdu, it is known as "Sabz Hilali Parcham": literally the green flag on the crescent. This country is located in South Asia and it has borders with India's neighbours, China, Afghanistan and Iran. On a map, you can see the Arabian Sea to the south, which borders its coastline.

This official version of the flag was adopted in 1947 when Pakistan gained its independence from the United Kingdom. The British colonial empire of India at the time divided the Indies into two independent states: India (Hindu) and Pakistan (Muslim).

Its design is attributed to Syed Amir-ud-Din Kedwaii, an activist of the Pakistan movement whose aim was to gain Pakistan's independence from the British Empire. The flag of Pakistan also became the first flag of the Muslim League, the political party for the creation of a distinct Muslim nation on the Indian subcontinent.
